Locations of Historic Mill Privileges in Walpole, Massachusetts with informative signage at each location
A privilege is a legally granted right to use water in a river; the Walpole privileges were granted in the 18th and 19th centuries. Walpole has historic mill privileges all along the Neponset River from South Walpole, through downtown and into East Walpole. There are also privileges on two main tributaries, Spring Brook and Mill Brook.
Our Driving Tour printable map lists the locations of each of the signs at the historic mill privileges; you could treat it like a treasure hunt, starting in South Walpole and working your way into East Walpole sign by sign. In most cases the sign (white font on green) will be at the place where the river crosses under or close to the road except when there is no safe sidewalk or stopping place. Five signs are on Walpole trails.
